I like endurance type pants for summer.  For winter I layer longies, polar fleece or similar and a nylon rain pant with possibly using wool pants instead of the polar fleece if really cold.  Wool men's suit pants from the thrift store with the addition of an elastic underfoot are cheap and easily found and replaced.  I have also made wool pants without inseams by taking a pair of snug fitting sweat pants and cutting on the out seam.  they are a bit pricey though when checking the cost of good wool material.  I have found wool military style pants work well also if you can find them in your size.  They frequently don't fit most women very well but work for those lucky people with slim hips.  When the weather is really frightful nothing beats the warmth of wool!  Some people swear by wearing panty hose instead of or in addition to long underwear.  I find that panty hose makes me colder though, probably because it doesn’t breathe well.  Probably why I don't wear it ever!!

Especially those of you who ride in rough terrain, and in serious winter, what type of pant does your unit wear? Most BDUs are too baggy to be comfortable riding for long distances or in rough brush. English style riding tights rip too easy and don't insulate enough in winter by themselves. Jeans don't make the cut for non-cotton clothing although they are comfy for riding and wear well in brush. Figured I'd get the community response and see how others have solved this problem.
