Okay, more questions. Are there outfitters in the Bandera TX area
who could supply horses and tack, on a private basis, to volunteers
coming in from far away, at the volunteers' own expense? How much
climb does the Bandera 100k have? And what is the base elevation?
General comments, not directed at anyone:
On the Jemez Mountains 50 mile race here in New Mexico the climb
is over 11,000 feet and the start is at 7,000 feet. So altitude
acclimation is a concern. But the top elevation is not 11k over
7k. :-) Climb and elevation are related as follows. On a loop
course, the climb is half of the total elevation change over the
course: every unit of climb is matched by a unit of descent.
Let's say you ran 50 miles on a course only a quarter mile long
(some ultrarunners actually do this) with an elevation change of
10 feet. Every lap around the course adds 10 feet of climb. A
50 mile race has 200 laps, so 200x10 = 2000 feet of climb.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultramarathon categorizes ultramarathon
races into "Road and dirt paths", "Mountain and trails", and "Extreme
conditions". The Jemez Mountain course (my "backyard") is gentle
in comparison to the Hardrock course in Colorado, but they pale in
comparison to the Extreme conditions courses.
