Pat,

To get your horse ready to carry the flag start with the flag in your hand
on the ground. Let the horse see and smell the flag. Rub the flag all over
the horse while it is folded and gradually unfold it to make it larger. Be
sure to wave it over the head and rear end. A piece of cloth the size of the
flag will do as well as the flag in case you must train in public and might
offend someone who might think this is not a proper way to treat the flag.

Once the flag is accepted by the horse, get on and ride the horse while
waving the flag about its head and rest of the body.

Not only do you have to think about the flag, but also you need to deal
with the crowds, music, strange environment, etc. If possible, take the
horse to the place where the event will be held to train. Play some loud
music and recordings of crowd noise at home. Horses who do well out on
trails need a gentle introduction to other settings to be comfortable. To
take a trail horse to other environments without preparation is not fair to
them or safe for you. They will adjust, just be patient.

Lois

Ride and seek sounds a bit like the "poker rides" that are
popular here.

The key to these is that there is no navigational challenge,
so there are fewer degrees of freedom (meaning ways to err).

Now, what would make for an interesting ride and seek for
MSAR training purposes is to have trainees navigate via GPS
to a well marked station (so they know when that task is
complete) then at the station perform a search task. Make
a good selection of terrain and "search problem", and leave
it up to the trainees to decide what kind of search method
to use. Eg, hasty search, area search, line search, sound
attraction. And how to apply the method.
