Isn't evidence preservation one of the classes at your SAREX or academy? We
have to have that along w/ man tracking, navigation, etc etc.

Hello Folks,

On the evidence destruction problem. One way to promote your unit with your
Sheriff's Office or any Police agency is to do what I did this last Spring.
Invite the agencies chief of dectative or his appointed person to one of your
business meetings. Request this officer to give a talk about evidence
protection. He/she can also talk about evidence gathering if you have to.
Believe me
this helps to verify any past information you have given your unit And word
certainly gets back through the agency you are trying to do good things and
how educated you are. We found it is a good idea to carry barrier tape and a
few surveyer small metal stakes in your saddle bags. The tape is to mark off
a
crime or suspected crime scene area and the metal stakes to stick in ground
to mark evidence or other.

Al Hale, Jackson County Mo. Sheriff's Mounted Posse Search Team

Bonnie, not everyone lives in a state in which state or regional
SAR training conferences are available. And even if they do, the
training may not be within reach. Eg, New Mexico's annual SAR
conference 2 years ago was 2/3 of the way to the southern border
of the state...a 6 hour drive for me. And it always takes place
in early May, during the peak of our calving and foaling season.
Many MSAR responders in New Mexico are ranchers or breeders, and
cannot spend 3-5 days away from home and work, especially not in
May. So, like Al Hale in Missouri, many of our units arrange to
have trainers come to them.

Una Smith
