Joreen is correct, check for other type of SAR resources within your region. Our team has members from two states and from different 8 counties. Our team will respond up to 3 or 4 hours from central MD.

I guess my biggest uphill battle is that most counties in our area are small. For example, Moore County, TN is aka metropolitan Lynchburg, TN. Otherwise, the whole county is basically one city. (this was a politcal move to keep another county from moving in.. Lynchburg may sound familar....Jack Daniels TN whiskey is made there). The nearest large county is 1.5 hrs away in Nashville. Is this a lost battle? >>

Nope. If you can justify forming a team to respond locally and regionally, you can still pursue it. With small counties you could even draw membership from multiple counties, and be on call to respond in all of those counties. Also, investigate if there are existing SAR teams willing to add a few Mounted to their membership.

First step might be to check with the nearby Sheriff's Departments to determine if there are any existing SAR / MSAR teams in your region.
