Hi,
I talked with Bejo Seeds about Kossak and the cracking issue. Here is the
response from Dennis Ferilito..."We have seen many heat related growth issues
this year. Kossak that was planted pre heat but was maturing as the heat
intensified tended to elongate. What was planted in the heat grew very
rapidly as long as there was water present. As a result they split. Where
they lacked moisture they grew more steadily and had less splitting. We
mostly see splits when they go through rapid growth near the later stage of
maturity. Excess fertilizer compounds the problem."
It appears that some varieties might be more prone to this than others but
we also saw this with some cabbage varieties as well.

I think you're right. Kossack is marketed as a large variety and most of the
cracked ones are between baseball and softball size. Although some small
ones are cracked also. The plants were set out in August and have had fairly
uniform moisture - either rain or irrigation since being transplanted.

Some varieties are not well adapted that is why a seeming great variety will
disappear from the catalogs. I used to grow a lot of kohlrabi for market and
would see splitting when I pushed them to a larger size. This may be your
problem. Bob.
