Bill - We do routine albrecht soil testing and amendment and more recently, tissue sampling.
I'm not seeing phosphorous deficiencies however, it's possible that the insect repelling via phosphorous you are speaking of is part of a secondary metabolite process that requires other co factors, one of which I may be deficient in.
Just the same: I think that flea beetles and harlequins are have appetites that bound beyond what we normally expect from insects, in fact they and cabbage butterfly larva are unique in being able to stomach brassicas.
So, are you saying the phosphorous application repels the bugs or kills the bugs?
7UP is one of the high phosphorus soft drinks, isn't it?
Thanks, Allan in WV

Allan,
My experience shows insects to be a phosphorus deficiency.
Organically we don't have a quick phosphorus. I use a phosphoric
acid based product.
If you want to see for yourself how this works, find some soda pop
with phosphoric acid in it and mix 8 oz to one gal of water and foliar
feed. Do not add anything else (kelp, molasses, etc). Phosphoric
acid is 85% phosphate. Most soda has citric acid so read the label carefully.
Works for Japanese beetles and even slugs on lettuce.
Bruce Tainio figured this out in 1988 and it works beautifully. It works
by changing the pH of the plant sap. I can explain more if you are curious.

Hey, Ben - How do you apply it? backpack sprayer? At what dilution?
Do you ever DIP the transplants?

The write-up can be found at: http://www.practicalfarmers.org/programs/Horticulture.php . Under the Research and Demonstration heading. A big problem I had was that the flea beetles had found the eggplant transplants before we even put them in the ground so putting a row cover on them just gave them a sheltered life : ). The only downside I found to using Surround is having to reapply it after ever quarter inch of rain which can be every day or twice a day if we get a rainy week.Ben SaundersFarm ManagerTurtle Farm: Certified Organic Fruits, Veggies, Herbs and TransplantsGranger, Iowa

I put it down within a day of the crop being transplanted or seeded. If I have a concern that some beetles are already present, I'll spray with Pyganic also.
