You're in Virginia, right? I don't remember where the original poster of this question is; but day length is a strong environmental trigger, and is going to vary with north/south location. I find lots of things quit growing when the days get too short.

I don't think we're quite at the point where lettuce stops growing for that reason in my location, though; but it's coming up soon. It'll stay alive and harvestable a lot longer, if protected; but growth eventually slows to almost nothing. I do think it's the availability of light.
