When I was a poinsettia grower, short days, a key part of the growing process, officially began around Sept 25th or there abouts. I don't know if this applies to lettuce. Around here we get our lettuce in by late August for fall harvest. In a hoophouse you can extend day with lighting. 40 watt bulbs spaced 4x4 feet. 2ft over plants... Bob.

You're in Virginia, right? I don't remember where the original poster of this question is; but day length is a strong environmental trigger, and is going to vary with north/south location. I find lots of things quit growing when the days get too short.
I don't think we're quite at the point where lettuce stops growing for that reason in my location, though; but it's coming up soon. It'll stay alive and harvestable a lot longer, if protected; but growth eventually slows to almost nothing. I do think it's the availability of light.
