Hi Richard
I have parttime farm with hired help usually on or near the weekends. Couple
of farms in two different locations. I have personal liability policy for
someone coming on to either farm with or without my knowledge and getting
hurt. And I have product liability for selling at my farm, at the farmers or
flea markets and a separate pick your own policy. The product insurances
rates are based on estimated total sales per year in those three areas. I am
not a big time farmer although I farm about 5 to 7 ish acres between really 3
locations. Insurance I have is through Nationwide agribusiness and they cover
the big row crop farmers of whom I am surrounded by at my prime location in
bennettsville, sc. Hope this helps I had to do a lot of research to set up.
Most of my peer farmers at the farmers market have no insurance of any kind.
I have worked too hard at my day job to invest in my farms to see my dreams
go up in flames. Hope this helps. I like to run low risk, peaceful approach
to farming. I also introduce new products into my farmers market all of the
time. Regards,

I wonder how those of you with smaller farms handle insurance. We are a
two-person
operation, with an honor farm stand, a micro-CSA, and a cut-your-own
Christmas tree
operation. We'd like to begin selling to more restaurants and markets. As
we've grown, the
question of how much our homeowner's umbrella liability covers any or all of
this has
become murkier, and we are reluctant to ask our insurer without some
background from
others (there are a few farms in town, but these are full-scale operations
with employees,
etc; I am not sure there are any other operations like ours nearby, so I am
not sure our
insurer would be familiar with similar situations).

All information appreciated!

thanks, Richard
