I think the Farm Family small farm program is called “Country Estate”.

We have had a lot of trouble with insurance over the years and have found that the only way to protect yourself is to have a good product, or personal liability policy.  Some states vary with liability umbrella insurance but according to insurance law an umbrella only covers what happens on the farm itself, not the product that is taken off the farm to other locations, some agents tell different stories, but a good lawyer will give you the true story for your state. One of our growers in our area is a practicing attorney and he has been very helpful in getting the right information to all of us in our growers org. about this issue, he sells cider and wines.

I wonder how those of you with smaller farms handle insurance. We are a two-person
operation, with an honor farm stand, a micro-CSA, and a cut-your-own Christmas tree
operation. We'd like to begin selling to more restaurants and markets. As we've grown, the
question of how much our homeowner's umbrella liability covers any or all of this has
become murkier, and we are reluctant to ask our insurer without some background from
others (there are a few farms in town, but these are full-scale operations with employees,
etc; I am not sure there are any other operations like ours nearby, so I am not sure our
insurer would be familiar with similar situations).

All information appreciated!

thanks, Richard
