Amen, Mike!
I'm really learning the value of recipes and tips in increasing sales.  I started doing double-sided "What to do with X" sheets that I laminate and offer to email to folks if they want them (a lot of people -including me- are hesitant to print out a bunch of copies that may just get thrown out without another look).  They spend a few minutes checking out a recipe for cucumber soup, knowing it will arrive in their inbox that evening, and decide they can use twice as many cukes as planned!

On a related note, I finally harvested some purslane for today's market!  I did a "What to do with Purslane" sheet, which included some nutritional info as well as recipes.  We weren't real aggressive about marketing because it was a busy (!) day, but everyone we gave a little sample to and talked to about it bought some.  It wasn't a huge portion of my total sales, but...it's purslane!  I was going to pull it out anyway; I just spent a few extra minutes on it and made a few bucks.
Thanks to everyone for the tips on selling it.

Is it really mid-August???

Best,

Grill, baby, Grill. It's tough because I"m no chef, but I've sold more asian eggplant
by telling people how to cook it; no one knows but when they hear thinner skin,
slightly sweeter than regular and it's good grilled they're off (the new york times had
some recipes this past week).

Most people are used to the italian eggplant, tough as a battle axe and only good for lasagna.

Another thing is that a subscription (or check your library) to Cook's Illustrated or Cooks Country
will give you a ton of ideas to pass on.

Mike

>From grocery stores, I get $.80/lb for both "regular" and oriental
eggplant.  About 35lb in banana boxes.  Demand for "regular" is only
fair.  Demand for oriental is very poor.  At farmers markets, $1 each
or 4 for $3 for both types.  Demand for both at farmers markets is very
low.  I plant about 10% as much eggplant as okra, zucchini, tomatoes,
or peppers.  I spend more time trying to sell the eggplant.  And throw
more of it away.  Bah!  Humbug!  :-)
