I didn't pay much attention to the size of the holes, maybe 1/4 inch. I don't think its too critical. The slant of the jar determines the flow. I can easily work a 4 foot bed from both sides. Use like a salt shaker. Play with it.

Marty,

What size and how many holes do you drill in your mayo cover? For that matter, how far apart are they? The last ? may not be as important as the first, but could still impact the pattern and rate of seed drop. How wide of a path can you make with the jar?

Harris Seeds did offer a small hand crank seeder that made a narrow (4 or 5 ft. wide) pattern, but they discontinued it. I see that Earthway and Scotts both offer smaller, narrower spread seeders on their websites.

Thanks for your help,

Drill holes in the top of an old mayonnaise jar and sprinkle.

I use one of those broadcast seeders you carry with a sling over your
shoulder, and crank with one hand as you go down the row to spin the
broadcaster. I think mine is an old Earthway; it has a canvas bag;
I've had it for years and no longer remember where I got it. There are
several models on the market now; Johnny's, for instance, lists a
similar model for 49.00.

The seed won't wind up only in the aisles that way, though. I'm
usually underseeding the clover through the whole field, for the next
year's cover crop. If you don't want the clover up in the rows, the
broadcast seeders wouldn't be a good choice.
