Marty,
A few years back I wanted to know if inoculant made a difference in MY
soil, so I prepped a raised bed of good loam soil, high organic
matter. Planted first 1/2 with uninoculated soybeans (edamame), then
mixed soybean inoculant with seeds and planted the other 1/2 of the
bed. The difference was dramatic, in terms of plant vigor, depth of
green in leaves, days to maturity, yield, etc. Wish I had taken
pictures, though I did bring a group of students over for a visual on
the value of nitrogen fixation.
So I'd suggest doing your own on-farm research, both with and without
the proper inoculant, used per directions, and note any difference.
As for persistence in soil, there are multiple factors affecting that,
though due to crop rotation I re-inoculate yearly. Again, easy to
design an experiment to test inoculant persistence in your soil.
