I actually use both a couple of old small tractors (Oliver 550's) and the Troybilt. Sometimes it's as fast and easy to do the job with the Troybilt as it is to switch equipment back and forth on the tractors. Sometimes in a small area it just works better to use the Troybilt.

But yes, if you''re only going to get one or the other, and you have any significant area to deal with, I'd get an actual tractor. An old farm tractor (but not too old to have 3 point hitch and live PTO and enough gears for what you need to do with it) may not cost you much more than a new Troybilt or BCS. Get a model for which there's also an old mechanic in your area who knows how to keep it running.
