NOFA - NY and others have been working on a small scale grain growing project for a few years I believe.  I think there is probably info on their website somewhere.  www.nofany.org

A couple of years ago someone contacted me about a seriously heirloom wheat growing project in New England. I've forgotten the details. I think this was a breeding project based on very ancient European wheat. Small farms and farmers were involved in this project. 
 
Does this ring a bell with anyone?
