Most folks around here are switching to the giant rectangle bales--can they
be separated and fluffed by hand for mulching?

This season I tried using straw bales that were 8 feet long with 3 feet x 3 feet "flakes" to mulch strawberries for winter.  I usually only use the small bales but was offered some large to use so gave them a shot.  The ones I used were not difficult to break into the flakes, but were packed so tightly that it was really hard to fluff them and spread by hand.  From my experience I am not going to use large bales again.  It took too much time to separate the tightly packed slabs and was very hard on the wrists and hands.  I can only imagine what neighbors thought seeing someone "body-slamming" straw to get it to break apart.
