A big challenge for us this past Summer in our KY clay soils, especially in the heat and dry, was soil crusting over our direct seeded crops.
Aside from getting more water on these areas, to keep the crust soft and the seeds germinating and growing, I was wondering if anyone had any tricks?
Mulch! I'm in KY, too. Even if you're direct seeding, you can still put a thin layer of mulch on the dirt to keep it from crusting. Ideally we use fresh grass clippings, but straw and hay are also acceptable. If you don't put it on too heavy, the seedlings will still find their way through.
