- Subject: [Market-farming] How to build root cellar?

Suggestions and comments are solicited. I'd like to make a root cellar out of food-grade 275-gallon plastic cubitainers. One cube for each crop. My thoughts are to dismantle or partially remove the metal cage so that a 1 x 2 foot section could be cut out of the top edge of the cubitainer. This cutout would be re-used as the hinged cover for the eventual mini root cellar. Drill a series of holes in the bottom of the cube for moisture/humidity to enter the cube. Bury the whole thing up to the edge of the hinged door/flap in the earth sitting on a bed of about 5-6 inches of gravel. Mound up the part sticking above ground with hay or straw bales. Some books show a fresh air pipe into the root cellar and a stale air exist pipe. Are these needed? Suggestions please. Is this plastic cubitainer approach worth the effort? Has anyone else come up with a winter storage solution for root crops? Are there other ways to get a root cellar without running a cooler or refrigerator? Many thanks.
