- Subject: [Market-farming] Modern day root cellar?

Suggestions and comments are solicited. I'd like to figure out how to make a root cellar out of food-grade 275-gallon cubitainers. My thoughts are to dismantle or partially remove the metal cage so that a 1 x 2 foot section could be cut out of the top edge of the cubitainer. This cutout would be re-used as the hinged cover for the eventual mini root cellar. Drill a series of holes in the bottom of the cube for moisture/humidity to enter the cube. Bury the whole thing up to the edge of the hinged door/flap in the earth sitting on a bed of about 5-6 inches of gravel. Mound up the part sticking above ground with hay or straw bales. Some books show a fresh air pipe into the root cellar and a stale air exist pipe. Will have to think about how to mount those. Suggestions please. Is this worth the effort? Are there other ways to get a root cellar without burning precious energy to run a motor or compressor? Many thanks. Tom (zone 7b, central NC)
