Do you  treat shallots like garlic? I mean do you plant in the fall and mulch?

Might depend on where you are. When I first tried growing them, I both fall planted and spring planted them for several years. The spring planted always did better; winter survival was poor where I am. Fall planting might work further south, I don't know.

Now I always plant them in April, when I plant out onion transplants.
