I think there is a lot to that. Earlier this year, I had red squirrels
pilfering strawberries from my farm stand. I trapped three before the problem
stopped. There were still red squirrels around, but no more stolen berries.
It makes sense that one animal would pick up the habit from watching another.
A few years back, we had awful damage from grey squirrels sampling our
pumpkins. That behavior didn't spread, apparently, because we haven't seen it
since.
