Mike-  We start our bedding plants in our basement.  It is unfinished so I hang lights from the floor joists using chain.  That way I can move the lights up and down as needed.  I use saw horses with boards across them for tables.  I buy 6000K T12 bulbs from Lowes in boxes of 10 and pay about $2 per bulb.

BTW - We start our plants in a 75 gallon aquarium that is covered with foam board.  The heat mat on one end of the aquarium keeps the whole thing in the lower 80s and has worked well this year.  We use starting flats and it was easy to prep sweet potatoes for slips while we were starting a few hundred peppers, herbs and tomatoes.  We grew all of our sweet potato slips in  this and will in the future.

We are small scale and grow about 1500 plants.  Probably won't work as well if you are larger than we are.  - mac

Hello All,

I am working on my supplies list for next year- I hope to lease some land and start a small farm. I would like to ask for recommendations about how to set up growing lights for vegetable starts- what types have you had success with? I would also be interested in any heat mat recommendations.
