Barb, we just turned under some pasture up near Boulder.  We had two patches, about 1/2 acre total.  Both were turned over with a plow, set for a couple weeks (mostly because of the rains we have been getting.)  Then one was disc-ed. It is still a bit lumpy. The prarie grass is tough.  The other patch we will do with a small tractor/tiller combo as it was too small a driveway to get the disc into  We will probably also do the disc-ed patch with the tiller to smooth it out some more.  We found a local farmer that was willing to do it for a reasonable cost.  The big tractor did it all so quickly!

You might want to find out if there’s someone local who can plow it with a moldboard plow and run over it with a disc. Let it rest a couple of weeks then it should till much easier as the native sod will break down during that rest period.

Barb asked:

My father wants me to use part of his place.  It is tough native sod grass, Colorado native prairie.  We do not currently have a tiller that can do this work.  He has a 15HP small Kubota tractor and I have a skid steer.  Which is the best way to go?  We can buy a tiller to use on his Kubota with the PTO or I can rent a tiller to put on the Bobcat.  I'm leaning toward just renting a tiller for the Bobcat since I did our horse arena with it last year and was pleased with how well it did.  I only am going to do 1/2 acre, so it doesn't has to be a big tractor.  Thoughts?  Suggestions?  Thank you!
