I have found a mix that works great and it is really simple.  It is a 5:1:1 mix

5 parts Pine Bark Fines I use screened pine bark mulch (2 2-cubic feet bags)
1 part Peat (5 gallon bucket)
1 part Perlite (5 gallon bucket)
2 cups limestone
2 cups control release fertilizer

This mix cost me about $13-16 to make. Less when I can get materials on sale at the end of the year.  More when I buy during the season.  I get 23-25 hanging baskets out of one batch.

This equates out to $0.50-0.60 cents a basket.
The baskets cost me $1.30-$1.50 shipped.
The seeds/plants are nominal 16-25 cents a pot.

I will have $1.96 -2.35 in each basket. I have not figured labor because that varies from farm to farm.

I have been using this stuff for 3 years and I am very happy with the results and so are my customers. It retains water well and is light and airy for good root development.  I encourage my customers to fertilize  (fertilizer of your own choice) at half strength every 2 weeks.

Here in Nova Scotia, I buy baskets for $5.95, I figure the filling is $2 to $3 a basket and the seeds and time must get me up to close to $10.  What do you use to fill the baskets?  I've been using a mixture of regular potting soil and one that has moisturizing globules in it - rather expensive.  Maybe I don't need the latter.

Yes I know the $12 is on the low side, however I am making a good profit.   I was wondering about selling them for $14 and two for $25. But I don't want to be greedy at my smaller hometown market.  My one market in more of a urban area, I am going to charge the higher price.  It is also further away and costs more to sell at.  I have over 100 of these baskets to sell this year. I spread out them so they are different sizes and I will be able to sell them well into June.  The reason is that when people buy the Topsy Turvy tomato hanger and the tomato dies, they will be looking for another idea of a hanging tomato.

If you want to know what I am talking about with the hanging tomato baskets, here is a picture of one from last year.

Or you could look at the blog after my name to look at this years offering.
