the Permaculture literature has addressed this issue very well. I would suggest looking towards the index of David Jacke's book "Edible Food Forests" printed by Chelsea Green. There is a composite of plants resistant to juglone.
I know one can use mulberries and elderberies in a guild with Juglans nigra (Black Walnut). These plants effectively buffer and partly neutralize the allopathic effects of juglone in the surrounding soil profile.

Bill: Thanks for the reminder -- juglone. Found some other material from
Purdue, and other university web sites that say that squash, melons, beets,
carrots, corn, onions and parsnips are tolerant if you're 50' from the drip
line.

Opening some new beds so have to decide if I want to take a chance. They
just barely clear the 50'.

Thanks,

Elaine

Black Walnuts produce a phytotoxin, juglone, which will inhibit the growth of
many species of plants. Most vegetables can be affected. The high-risk zone
is anything within 1.5x the drip line. Some think its more because it depends
on sensitivity/tolerance and movement of walnut debris.

Subject: [Market-farming] black walnuts trees
Folks: I remember that black walnut trees are not friendly to gardens, but can't remember particulars. Can anyone help? How far from the tree -- from the trunk? from the drip line?
The grass and flowers seem to grow well enough under and around it. Are there certain crops that won't tolerate the tree?
Many thanks for any help with this. Almost 80 today, for a change
