Marlin:  Thanks for sharing your first hand experience.  Some of the reading I did at the university web sites tell of having trouble with tomatoes 6 years after the tree was gone.

Glad to hear that you were 50' from the trunk -- the web sites talk about 50' from the drip line.  So maybe I'll give it a try since I'm 50 feet from the trunk and put in some of the tolerant crops.

We have had a big walnut tree beside our market garden for years so we have firsthand experience with the juglone effect.  We had it cut down about a week ago.  My question will now be "how many growing seasons till the juglone gets out of the soil enough to allow sensitive plants to grow within the danger zone?"  Corn, carrots, lettuce, beans, spinach, brocolli, and cauliflower seem not to be effected.  Cucumbers and canteloupes I'm not yet sure about.  Tomatos, peppers, potatos, eggplant, and okra are definately effected.  Generally I have stayed at least 50 feet away from the trunk with sensitive crops and not had serious damage.  General guidlines call for a 80 feet radius of avoidance.  I have a field entrance beside the tree which cuts out part of the danger zone so I have generally been able to work around it.

Folks:  I remember that black walnut trees are not friendly to gardens, but can't remember particulars.  Can anyone help?  How far from the tree -- from the trunk? from the drip line?

The grass and flowers seem to grow well enough under and around it.  Are there certain crops that won't tolerate the tree?

Many thanks for any help with this.  Almost 80 today, for a change
