Richard, you might try and use an electric drill with a small diameter
earth drill. I use a bosch 36volt electric drill for ice fishing -
usually can get 25-30 holes per battery pack in 12" of ice. I would guess
in sandy loam you could get 50+ per charge at a smaller diameter.
