I have tried it many times and for the most part it won't work. By the time your corn is 2ft tall its a week from tassel and two more weeks to harvest hardly enough time to grow a smother crop. Yes its a great idea to over seed rye grass or vetch when the corn is 2ft tall but it will never grow enough during the corn harvesting season to be any use as weed control.  You can drill corn into a growing covercrop but the competition will ruin your corn and at the very least suck the soil dry of any moisture. For the best yield and quality of your corn keep the soil as weed free as possible as long as you can...Bob.

Has anyone had success establishing a smother cover crop under sweetcorn?  We transplant our sweetcorn into the field and cultivate until the crop is about 2’ high.  At that point I’d like to sow a cover crop under the corn that will germinate and grow quickly enough to shade out any broadleaf weeds until harvest is over.  We grow several 72-80 day varieties.  I know some folks relay different clovers into corn, but it sounds like the majority of the growth of those covers happen after the corn is harvested and/or flailed off.  Has anyone tried soybeans?  Any other successful cover crops for weed control?
