We use baling twine (most of which is nylon now) for all sorts of tie-up and tie-back needs. It's free, it doesn't break down in direct sunlight (ever!) and wow that stuff is strong. I don't think this is an issue for the nylon, but if any of your neighbors are still using non-synthetic baling twine, it's probably treated with something to keep it from breaking down. I don't know what the treatment is, I just know that the certification people say "buy untreated twine!" and that I have an ancient roll of old treated stuff in the barn (lasting forever as it is now used only to tie up things about to go in the trash) and I can smell the treatment on it. -- Rivka; Finger Lakes NY, Zone 5 mostly Fresh-market organic produce, small scale |
