We grew Fargo yellow pear last year, because it was supposed to be crack
resistant. I think it cracked worse than anything. We've decided this year to
not grow any yellow or red pear. I don't know. Over the years we've grown a
lot of different cherry tomatoes. And, they all do fine until we get a big
rain, then they all crack. It doesn't seem to matter how we fertilize.
irrigate, pick, or whatever, if we get 3" of rain, they will crack. My
husbands theory, which always drives me nuts, is to plant more than we can
pick. Then, when they do crack there is always enough that didn't crack for
market. Last year we had 118 cherry tomato plants. It would take me 6 hours
to pick one side. 2 gallon buckets, that I filled about 1/2 way and sort of
scooch along with my foot and pick with both hands. I also use the strap on
stool. Sit while picking down low, stand while picking up high.
I'm thinking that if my husband actually had to pick cherry tomatoes, those
plant numbers might come down...
Carla
Perkins, OK. I have spent the last 3 days transplanting. I am so tired.
