Our crop cards document the life cycle of every planting we do, so it's useful to have a unique id associated with each crop. I came up with a system that works very well. I've used it for the past three years, and it keeps "sticking" for us each year.

The id tag consists of the date in yymmdd format plus the planting sequence for that day. For example, the first flat of a lettuce seeding on May 23 got labeled [090523.01 LET], and the second flat was [090523.02 LET], etc.

When we had multiple people doing seeding, we had them add their initial to the id number, [090523.01C] where "C" indicated Carla, etc.

The next day, or for the next person planting, the .01, .02 sequence starts over again.

Voila, each crop had a unique id, but anyone could create the id from memory without referencing anyone else's work. The id went on the flat labels, on the crop card, and eventually into the spreadsheet (though the last step hasn't completely happened for me yet).
