Marie we have been using mats for a long time for all of our eary starts.  Nolt's have them and they have proven to last a good many years.  Our original controller has got to be over 25 years old and still is working quite accurate on temp.  I have had to replace a mat or two over the years but it is very effficent for the light bill.  I really never notice when we start them up.  I use 2 contollers and 6 mats in the early spring.  Two of the mats were special order lengths 20' and the other ones are 10'. We use differnt controllers so we can use different starting temp's.  I always plant onions the 1 of Dec in flats cover them with domes and put them on  a 10' mat and set the temp at 80 in an unheated greenhouse and they grow just fine.  Water once a week.  We do artichokes early starts this way as well but not quite as early.  We had one day above freezing and then back in to the deep freeze at 0 and below at nite and 10 to 15 during the day.  Need to shear at the end of the week, hope it warms up a bit by then.
