Now this sounds like a historically accurate idea. I am betting that there are a few exciting details to be worked out through "knock him in the head with something". I will definitely take this suggestion to the volunteer meeting on Sunday and see who's interested in a new banjo head. Someone will be, I'm sure. I could use better shoe strings myself. We have live-trapped, and caught a few. Not all. I do need to thin the Jerusalem artichokes and may put them on the compost pile to attract the monster away from the garden. I have also coated melons, pumpkins, gourds with hot pepper sauce. Groundhog likes tabasco and habanero apparently. It is still perplexing to me that I never have this problem on an 11 acre mixed vegetable farm, but struggle on a project where every pumpkin is essential to next year's budget. Thanks everybody for the suggestions. I wish my country-as-a-turnip-green grandfather was around to help. He'd probably have those critters braising in bacon grease by now.
