Our ground is pretty rough, and the Hatfield works well. We don't
plant through plastic, but the instructions say you can sharpen the
ends and that it will then punch through plastic. The transplanter
does work best on the ground that we have just tilled. The 2" has a
huge opening so it should work on a 36 cell transplant. The small one
which is the one I bought first worked well for us with 200 cell, 98
cell, and even some 72 cell stuff. It has a depth adjuster on it so
you can control to some extent how deep you go.
This thing really is amazing. My husband was very skeptical when we
first saw the transplanter in the catalog. I watched the video
several times, showed it to my husband, and he said not to buy one. I
ignored him. After using it he became a convert very quickly!
We lay out our drip lines, and turn them on so we can get our plant
spacing right. We have to watch that though because if it gets very
wet, and muddy the mud will clog up the bottom where the plant drops
out. We've learned to turn on the drip just long enough to dampen the
ground enough so we can see where to plant. We use 12" emitter
spacing on the drip so this works out pretty good for most of our
plant spacing.
We've used the transplanters on most of the vegetables, and nearly
all of the flowers.
If you have rocky soil, which we don't, you might run into problems.
I don't know how well the transplanter would hold up if it hit rock.
