Johnson grass should be a cuss word. As in, "Oh JOHNSON GRASS I just went to town and forgot to buy dog food."

Sam,
Hay can cause problems. We only use our own hay, so we aren't importing
"new" weeds, but it has plenty of seeds typically. We feel that the
labor saving and soil-building are worth the risk. It does prevent most
weeds during the season. It takes a lot of hay to get it deep enough to
be effective, so if you're buying it, can get expensive fast. Even with
our own, we don't use it on everything! Oh, and Johnson Grass comes
right through it - and grows beautifully with the even moisture and
fertility the hay mulch provides!

Folks,
Does hay cause problems for you as a mulch? What
about weeds from the hay? Or do you keep mulching
year after year?
I know Alison has experience with this....
Still trying to decide if I really need to buy that
Kovar Tine Weeder....
Thanks,
Sam
