The tunnel is a very neat idea, and sounds like it is perfect for some applications, especially with respect to storage...
If you decide to stick with round cages, I think 18 inch diameter is pretty standard. If you cut the sections at 56 inches, you'll be very close to that, although you might want to leave a little extra to bring the two sides together.
