The old recommendation was to not pick asparagus until the third season. You planted Jersey Knight last year. If your plants made good progress and developed a healthy set of foliage last year, you could harvest for a couple of weeks this year. But you want to protect your investment in the future of your crop by letting the foliage develop early. This will allow the crowns underground to build themselves up for next season, when you will be able to harvest for 6-8 weeks. This is one of the benefits of the Jersey varieties. They are generally stronger, give greater harvests and can be cropped a little earlier.

We planted Jersey Knight last year from, what?, two year old roots?
They are coming up right now. What's the best practice for this first
year after planting? Do not harvest any, or harvest for a couple of
weeks or ...? Thanks -Allan (Shepherdstown, WV zone 7)
