Anyone from the mountains on this list growing
shiitakes?? Attended a workshop today to learn how to
innoculate our logs but didn't have the chance to ask
what strains are recommended for our climate/elevation
(if that has any effect, not sure, but we're at 2900
ft--sure effects hardiness zones!!) Dr. Omon said he
knew exactly what strains grow best in which
regions/climates but we didn't get a chance to slow
him down enough to ask ; )) I've got an email out to
him but sometimes getting that answered takes time. I
want to get our spawn ordered asap so we meet our goal
of innoculating 200 logs in February (IF only winter
will return before sap starts rising..arrgghh!!).

Oh, and one other thing...Dr Omon discussed the
importance of using natural water sources which isn't
a problem...we don't have municipal water here anyway.
But he mentioned the mineral content in water having
a detrimental effect on mushrooms. Not sure what the
rain quality is like around here and haven't done a
water test yet either though that's on the to-do list.
Which minerals are detrimental?? What should we look
out for...do the minerals affect fruiting or quality
of the mushroom, or spawn run, etc etc??
