It's likely the pile didn't stay uniformly moist throughout long enough, or
there wasn't enough nitrogen-rich material mixed in to do the whole job.
Aged animal manure or green manures that have been out in the weather a
while will lose most of their nitrogen.
During the first six months it rained almost every week and new manure was
added to the pile each month. At the end of each six month period a new pile
is started and the old pile is left to finish until if is eighteen months
old.
