As Pat Meadows noted in her post, some gourds are Cucurbits pepo, which means they can cross with summer squashes (including zucchini, crookneck, patty pan, etc.), as well as many winter squashes, (acorn, delicata, etc.) and pumpkins (jack o'lantern types) which are also Cucurbita pepo. That's why controlled pollinations (by hand) are important for preserving varieties of pumpkins and squashes.

No there is no truth to that. Gourds cannot cross with any kind of
squash or cucumbers, different species (though same genus)
All squash are cucurbitas but not all squash can cross with each other.
FEDCO says this:
The genus cucurbita has 6 different species of which 3 are in the FEDCO
catalog. Different varieties withing the same species will cross readily
but crossing does not occur between the different species.<snip> You
need to isolate crops of the same species by at least 1500' or protect
it from insects who can bring unwelcome pollen and hand pollinate yourself.
Be aware that all summer squash, zukes, pattypans, most pumpkins, acorn,
delicata, spaghetti are pepos
buttercup, kuri, hubbard, turks turban, candy roaster are all maximas
(as are any grey "pumpkins" like Jarrahdale and giant pumpkins)
Butternut is a moschata as are most cheese squashes
