Have you tried those motion-detector sprayers (Scarecrow sprinklers)?
They're mostly used to keep cats and dogs off one's property, but could be
rigged to detect birds, I would think.
Here's a blurb
Keep Deer And Other Pests Off Your Lawn Or Out Of Gardens. Use a harmless
blast of water to rid your yard or garden from unwanted visitors like deer,
rabbits, raccoons, large birds and the neighbor's dog or cat. It's easy -
when the infrared adjustable range sensor detects an animal up to 35 feet
away, the Scarecrow emits a 3-second burst of water. The combination of
sudden noise, movement and water sends the invader scurrying and it learns
to avoid the area in the future. Adjustable setting allows for 10 to 360
degrees of coverage and sprays up to 45 feet. 30 high. 9V batteries, not
incl.
