Greetings from geologically similar Dominica,

We too have serious problems with small birds that eat flowers, fruit, beans, etc. etc. We have tried plastic snakes (very realistic) and mylar reflective tape, but within a few days the birds are no longer wary. Although we have not tried rattling noise makers, I cannot believe the birds would be put off for more than a few days. The only thing we have found that can protect our crops is netting and it has to be 3/8" or less and rigid better than pliable. 3/4" was routinely squeezed through. Dalen Products makes a reasonably priced Pond & Pool Netting that works fine and seems to last well. It comes in 28'x28' or 14'x75' sizes through various dealers. I bought through Paradise Water Gardens and through Mellingers.
Good luck,

Karen Sutherland

Aloha!
I am an extension specialist working with immigrant farmers in Hawaii. One huge problem my farmer cooperators have is flocks of birds that come and eat newly emerged radish, long bean flowers, young eggplants, and young cucumbers. The farmers tried many things that will not cost them money - empty soda cans that will make noise when tied together and rattled, looked/bought what Gempler has to drive away birds, but of no help. Anyone in the list has a good idea to share? You can send me your response off the list to prevent too much clutter. Mahalo!
