We have rented our farm and house for the past 12 years but are actively looking for a 5 to 15 acre farm of our own as the landlords in the past 6 months have put in an unannounced furnace (we have happily heated with wood the past 12 years) and than raised the rent 150% with originally a 5 day notice (until I pointed out they were stepping on our rights according to several Ohio codes). we also are facing some big farm management problems out here because of decisions and actions made over six years ago-2500 trees were planted on the land we farm and now the trees (over 50% black walnut) are too big to plant under unless the crop likes shade and major competition from the trees. Not to mention we cannot erect any building without permission of the owners and a raise in our rent.

My husband and I are frustrated renters, in that, until recently have treated this rental house and land like our own and have done a lot of work on the place (and it needs a lot more). we are those mythical renter people who always leave the places we live in a lot better shape than when we got there

So we are looking for our own land, hopefully house on it. We really need a place of our own to do exactly what we want to do. But I will say the rent experience for us was good. we had amazing cheap rent for over a decade (but we do live in a wooden tent) and the landlords let us play around with 9 acres and learn about how to grow crops as well as how to deal with a house in not so great shape. But now it is time for us to go.
