keeping coyotes out of a melon patch
A low electric fence helps, but what we did was paint the fruits with pepper.  You can buy it, but we just picked some of our hottest peppers and mixed em up with water in the blender.  (Might need to do this outside because of the fumes.  and don't have your face over it when you take off the lid!)  we took a bucket of this and a cheap paint brush and gave a swipe to each melon.  The coyotes and wild dogs don't seem to like pepper on their melon and left them alone.  the pepper did not penetrate the shell of the melon, even the cantaloupes.  We also didn't need to keep treating - they knew they didn't like our melons!
Good luck.
