Today I disced in some of my rye cover crop, I seeded it last October it
never germinated until a month ago and now its 6 ft tall and heading
out. Its not good to let rye get this far ahead, its best tilled in
under 2 ft tall while still tender, but it happens to all of us sooner
or later.
It took me about an hour per acre to disc twice, to fully incorporate
the rye using a 50 hp tractor and a small 7 ft disc. I used a little
over a gallon of fuel per acre.
If I used my Troybilt it would have taken forever, first I would have
had to mow down the rye then let it mellow three weeks to be soft enough
for the tiller to chop it up without balling up in the tines, the I
would have to run over it three or four times.

Tillage is a drag, the sooner I can get the job done the sooner I can
get on with the fun stuff, life is too short to spend it bouncing around
behind a hand tiller.
I always tell people the best way to manage your farm is to learn how to
manage your time, then everything else will fall into place..Bob.
