Mat and Pat
It had slipped my mind that this want a yahoo group so I am not aware of
whether this group does cost the host anything to operate. But the idea of
turning a discution group in gerneral into a you gotta pay to be here
situation sort of defeats the purpose of a discution group.
I have watched so much of the net change over the years from a place where
people shared information about things they did ,loved and were excited about
to a you gotta pay me to find out anything about anything model you have to
subscribe to things to even find out if they are of any value at all. This has
bothered me a lot over the years. It takes a medium of shareing information
and turns it into a medium for selling information.
If the owner of this list is haveing to pay a fee to host the list then
certaily it should be a shared expense by all the members if it is excessively
high then it would make sence to move it to a service that doesnt cost. But I
look at a subsctiption site a lot different than a discusion site. I have
belonged to subscrion sites but they were for technical data and when I posted
a request for a diagram or the specs on some componant I expected speedy and
acurate replys and if the service requested information diagrams or specs from
me expected to be compensated by them in some form ( often credit toward my
next dues or downloads)
Basicaly by setting up a subscription servce you are going into the info
brokering business if I have to pay for what I get it better be up to spec and
accurate or I wont feel that I am getting my moneys worth. and likewize I
would feel that I should be compensated for accurate useful contributions that
I make (if I submit an article to a magazine that I susbscribe to I expect to
be paid for the article if it is published ) my knowledge and experiance in
things I am compentent in has as much value as anyone elses knoweldge and
experiance.
My whole point is not to attack the list owner or devalue thier time or
efforts but to point out that all our time and contributions have value and
the primary value of a discution list is to share that value and enhance all
our endeavors when we start setting prices on the ability to share what we
have learned with each other and help solve one anothers problems we have
stoped being farming neighbors and entered into the corporate rat race.
Just my opinion (which may have no value at all therefore I dont charge
for it ) : )
