Yahoo does not charge for a list, that is true. This list,
however, as you apparently did not notice, is *not* hosted
at Yahoo. I do not know if 'ibiblio.org' charges for a list
or not: my guess would be that they do not.

Many long-term members of the list feel that it's only fair
that we recompense Liz a modest amount for her time and
efforts. I've been a listowner myself, although of a much
smaller list, and I agree with this opinion. It takes
considerable time and effort to do the job at all, and
certainly to do a good job at it.

It could easily be done even if the hosting service does not
charge for the list. At YahooGroups (and likely at
Ibiblio.org as well) the listowner can choose to admit all
comers or to confine the list to 'by-invitation only'.
Nothing to it.

In case Ibiblio does not allow lists to operate by
invitation only, Liz can simply shift the list to
Yahoogroups. Foreseeing possible difficulties of this
nature, I have recently started a list at Yahoogroups with
the name 'MarketFarming' - I'm just holding that name in
reserve at the moment. I would be more than happy to hand
ownership of that list over to Liz.

Or some of us (me, for instance) have the capability of
hosting a mailing list at our web-site provider's
facilities. This would cost me no more than the current
amount my husband's business pays the web host (for other
services) now, nothing additional. So the list could move
there or to a similar place as yet another alternative.

I hope this information clarifies the situation for you.

Assuming the list goes to 'invitation only' and the
invitation involves an annual payment, and you do not wish
to participate on that basis, you are of course free not to
participate.

Cheers,
Pat
