Sounds like a good risk. Mississippi's own "wild man of horticulture" (my
title, meant as a sincere compliment), Felder Rushing (just google his name
for a fun website), did a seminar for growers on just that topic at our
recent sust. ag conference. Even in rural areas of MS (much less the
cities) there is a demand for "old-timey" plants and of course, no nurseries
carry them, or only carry one cultivar.
Another advantage - these natives tend to be much tougher and require
little/no pesticides, irrigation, coddling, etc. Germination rates are
probably alot lower than with lettuce, tomatoes, etc., but I bet many could
be vegetatively propagated. And it is easy to start small. I am
considering it when I retire from dairy goats! (p.s. don't tell the goats)
