I am not surprised at the power of this list. Just a few hours after I
posted my questions the president of the Association of Specialty Cut
Flowers called me! He advised me to contact Lynn Byczynski and I will be
doing that.
Barb, thanks for the info. I checked out the SwallowTail seed place and the
Lisianthus they offer is 608 inches tall- a potting variety. I e-mailed the
Jolly Farmer and am waiting to hear if they can get acceptable seed and do
plugs for me.
Why would I want to grow organic flowers? Even though we don't eat flowers
the same ecological problems attend commercial flower growing as
non-organic vegetable and meat production; sometimes even worse problems.
Since the product is not eaten stronger insecticides and pesticides can be
used on flower crops. Growers, a grower's employees, wholesalers, florists,
and the end consumers get to touch, smell and dispose of these poisonous
flower crops.
That said, another reason I would like to become certified organic is to
have specific marketing niche. Local organic products are a niche where a
flower grower can find realistic value for what they grow. The interest is
out there at the organic /co-op grocery stores, to discriminating members of
CSA's, not to mention branding yourself at a farmers market.
I'll try to keep ya'll posted on the search. Thanks for your help.
